About

Writer, editor, public speaker, spreadsheet keeper.

I’m a journalist and media entrepreneur based in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.

I grew up in Valleyview, Alberta, a town of 1,800 people north of the 55th parallel. As far as I could tell, there was no valley and no view, but that’s beside the point. I spent a lot of time dreaming of how someday I was going to change the world. Growing up in Valleyview shaped my journalism in many ways, most of all my passion for sharing complex, nuanced stories that go beyond stereotypes and he says/she says dualities. Done well, I believe journalism can help us understand one other and the world around us better.

My freelance writing has appeared in Reader’s Digest, The Globe and Mail, the Literary Review of Canada, Maisonneuve, Best Canadian Essays, Chatelaine and The Inertia. I’ve won a National Magazine Award for personal writing, a National Newspaper Award for feature writing and a Digital Publishing Award for general excellence. I’ve also been named to Canada’s Clean50, and been recognized by BC Business magazine’s Women of the Year awards and Mount Royal University’s alumni awards.
