Bold, beautiful journalism

In 2018, I co-founded The Narwhal, an online magazine dedicated to in-depth and investigation journalism about the natural world in Canada. In its first five years, The Narwhal grew from two to 22 staff, opened bureaus across the country and won more than 20 national journalism awards. The Narwhal is a pioneer of non-profit journalism in Canada supported by donations from nearly 10,000 readers each year who make our advertising-free journalism possible. The Narwhal’s innovative approach has been recognized by the Solutions Journalism Network and the Canadian Journalism Foundation. In 2024, our team won the Michener Award for public service journalism — the highest honour in Canadian journalism.

As executive director and editor-in-chief, I’ve done everything under the sun at The Narwhal, including developing the brand from scratch, reporting and editing, releasing a podcast, producing a print edition, fundraising, hiring, developing HR policies and managing a budget that’s grown by a factor of 10. On occasion, I even write about things like Vancouver Island’s famous elk Bob.

“The Narwhal manages to nail it: strong journalism, an innovative approach and undeniable impact.”
